| The
Tainos’ Indians were the first inhabitants of the Dominican
Republic. It was in the year 1492 when Christopher Columbus
first arrived on the island, and fifty years after his arrival
the Tainos’ tribe vanished. Nonetheless, there are still
traces of artwork of the Tainos Indians that they left behind.
The Capital city of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo,
is also called the first city of the Americas. Santo Domingo
is also recognized as being the place where the first cultural
and social institutions such as the first church, university,
hospital, and monuments where established.
