Carib Indians were the first to settle in
the island of Grenada thousands of years ago. Among the first
voyagers to visit the island and the Carib Indians was Christopher
Columbus, and was then followed by more Britain’s and
French men. For years the French slowly gained land by purchasing
it from the Carib Indians, for exchange of goods such as knives
and beads. In fear of losing their Island, the Carib Indians
fought against the French but instead of victory they fell
to their doom. Those who did survive eventually threw themselves
off a cliff that is now known as the “Leapers’
Hill.”
The British then took power over Grenada and began to set
up sugar plantations with African slave workers. Grenada was
soon free of slavery in 1834 when it was finally abolished,
and became independent in 1974. Today the island still glows
with natural wonders attracting thousands of tourists each
year.
