Jamaica was first inhabited by the Tainos, believed to be from South America. Columbus arrived in 1494, beginning five hundred years of European occupation and governance. The Spanish settled the island first and were defeated by the British during the 1650s. Under British rule, Jamaica became a wealthy and prosperous colony. Sugar became the main economy. Jamaica became an independent country in 1962.
