Europeans first discovered Nevis in 1493 when Christopher Columbus sighted it. The French and English began colonization in the 1600s while warring with native inhabitants and each other. Britain eventually prevailed, making Nevis and St. Kitts royal colonies until the two islands gained independence as the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis in 1983.
