COSTA RICA HISTORY
Before the arrival of Europeans,
archaeologists believe Costa Rica had been inhabited for as
far back as 10,000 years ago. Evidence found indicates the presence
of Mexican Olmec and Nahuatl civilizations. By the time Christopher
Columbus arrived in 1502, there were four native tribes inhabiting
the island: the Caribs in the east and the Borucas, Chibchas
and Diqis in the southwest. The natives either fled or were
decimated by disease. Today, Costa Rica’s population is
98 percent Caucasian.
After years of Spanish rule, Costa Ricans rebelled in 1821 and
soon after became an independent nation. Today it holds a reputation
as a peaceful and stable country. |
