HAWAII HISTORY
Polynesians first settled the Hawaiian islands between 600 and
700 AD. On January 1778, Captain James Cook’s expedition
made contact with the Hawaiian people on the islands of Kauai
and Niihau. Captain Cook was the first known European to arrive.
The islands of Hawaii were divided into a number of small kingdoms,
which were often at war with each other. In 1810 the reign of
a single king, Kamehameha, began. Hawaii was admitted into U.S.
statehood in 1959. |
